Zippered Pouch Tutorial
Step 1.
Decide on the size of your pouch and draw your zippered pouch pattern on a sheet of paper. If you would like your pouch to be 6 inches by 4 inches, make up a paper pattern that measures 7 by 5 inches - you need to add 1/2 inch on each side for seam allowance. Pin the paper pattern to fabric and cut out 2 rectangles for lining and 2 outer fabric rectangles. You will need a zipper that is as long as (or slightly longer then) the zippered pouch opening - for a 6 by 4 inch pouch with a 6 inch opening, I recommend using a 6 inch zipper.

Step 2.
Pin 1 exterior fabric rectangle, the zipper, and 1 lining rectangle together, using sewing pins. The zipper teeth and pull need to be facing the outer fabric, and the front sides of the exterior fabric and the lining need to be facing each other. When pinning the fabrics and zipper together, try to pin as close to the zipper coil, as possible.

Step 3.
Sew the lining, zipper, and outer fabric together, using your sewing machine. Zipper foot is preferrable, but if you don't have a zipper foot, make sure to keep the zipper pull away from the zipper foot at all times - you may need to stop the sewing machine, pull the zipper foot up, and slide the zipper pull out of the way. Remove the sewing pins as you go.
This is what your project will look like at this point, when you pull the fabric back. Although it looks like the fabric is very close to the zipper coil in the photo, it's not the way it actually turned out (sorry, my fault, for not pulling the fabric back all the way for the photo). It is important to pin close to the zipper coil when using sewing pins, but when stitching using a sewing machine, I suggest sewing about 1/4 inch away from the zipper - to prevent fabric from getting caught in the zipper.
Step 4.
Repeat steps 2 and 3 for the other side of the zipper. The face side of outer fabric will need to be facing the front side of the zipper, with the front side of the lining facing the back of the zipper (zipper will be in between the face sides of outer fabric and lining).

Open the zipper halfway. Pin the face sides of the linings together and the face sides of the exterior fabric together and sew all around the perimeter, leaving the bottom of the linings unsewn.
Step 6.
Turn the zippered pouch right side out.
Step 7.
Pin the bottom of the pouch as shown in the photo:
Step 8.
Finish the zippered pouch by stitching the bottom of the lining (as close to the bottom as possible). I used decorative stitch for my pouch.
